Solrød, with some 21.000 inhabitants, is located by the Køge bay area, 30 km South of Copenhagen. This Danish church-plant, Solrød Frikirke, started 8 years ago (2002). A group of dedicated people wanted to be church for the people in their area. This same group acted as a planting-team.
Now the church leadership team consists of people who have been elected by the church-plant. There are five on the team, of which two have been in the project from the start – some are related family-wise. Mai-Brit Tvilling pastors the plant.
- Friendship evangelism has been the main strategy to reach new people, Mai-Brit says. The former pastor is very gifted when it comes to preaching to children, and we have had some experiences with theatre for children and special designed children-worship services. The aim has been to reach children and, through them, their parents.
When I ask how the leaders of the team are trained for their task Mai-Brit says she wants to stay close to her team of leaders – they will spend time together – pray and share life. Her desire is to encourage, inspire and challenge them. She hopes to be able to encourage them into a deeper relationship with Jesus and be able to help them see themselves in the mission of God and how they fit in. It is important to envision the mission and the vision, she says, in order for us to be clear on why we do as we do, and not go astray. The connection to other church-planters, who are in the same situation as we, is valuable and I hope that we can have inspiring relationships with them.
The church culture is relaxed and jet solemn. We meet in homes, Mai-Brit shares, and in a hired place, which is also used by others in our community. Our worship style is modern – we sing modern worship songs, sometimes with a mix of hymns. We have a praise-team and use keyboard. Our intension in every worship service is that the preaching should be for all senses, since God speaks to us people in various ways.
I am blessed, Mai-Brit says, with inspiring colleagues and I consult them. The mix of solitude with Jesus and being with and taught by people with a passion for Christ, is inspiring and fills me with energy.
